December 27th Walking with Bartram

This month we’ll be hiking into one of the most remote areas of the Bartram Trail, through the estimable Nantahala National Forest between Wayah Bald and Nantahala Lake. There is a chance that Bartram himself stood atop of Wayah Bald when he described the “most elevated peak” of the Jore mountains. Of course, Lake Nantahala didn’t exist at the time, but the “mountains piled upon mountains” that Bartram reverently expounded on are much the same.

This is a 7.4 mile hike that descends, sometimes very steeply, towards the lake. Be prepared for very cold weather, ice, and an early sunset! We will meet at the Bartram Trail Parking area at Lake Nantahala at 9am and then shuttle to Wayah Bald from there.

November 22nd Walking with Bartram

The shorter hikes through town are behind us now and we’re embarking on the strenuous 10.8 mile trip from Wayah Bald to Wallace Branch. This hike has high elevation, fantastic views, and may be a little chilly when we’re getting started- just what we’re looking for when hiking in the mountains.

We’re going to meet at Wallace Branch at 9am and shuttle to Wayah Bald. We will probably be on the trail until about 4pm, and then we will pick up our vehicles and rendezvous at the Lazy Hiker in Franklin.

November 15th Third Friday Workday

We’ll be back in Georgia this week to do storm cleanup. Expect a lot of tree cutting and clearing brush!

Exact location is TBD but we’ll be working from 9am to 3pm.

Please bring work gloves, good boots, plenty of water, lunch, any meds you might need and esprit de corps.

Barkin’ with Bartram – Animal Rescue Walk

Barking with Bartram is teaming up with Appalachian Animal Rescue Center (aarc.franklin.nc) to feature a select furperson each month.

This November’s pupper is named Carrie

We all know how about William Bartram’s regard for animals. So if you’d like to join us on a walk with this sweetie, a beautiful red & blue tick hound mix, pack a little lunch and meet us in town at the Bartram Trail head at the County Fairgrounds. From there, we’ll hike the greenway section with Carrie and your @blueridgebartram friends in Franklin.

This is all about Carrie so we ask that we don’t bring other pets.
