December 12th Scaly Mountain Hike and Bascom Visit

Join us on December 12th for a lovely day exploring Highlands, NC and short(er) hike up to Scaly Mountain to take in the views! Afterwards, we’ll head over to The Bascom to take in more views of the wonderful Kinship Photography Exhibition currently on display. Following that, we may gather for a cold beverage and a bit to eat at the Ugly Dog Cafe in Highlands.

We’re planning to meet at the Hickory Nut Gap Rd parking area (just outside of Highlands) and side-trailhead for Scaly Mountain at 10am. The hike is a moderate ~3 miles round trip. We should be able to wrap up the hike around 2pm.

The exhibit at The Bascom will be on display through the first week of January, more information here if you wan to visit on your own.

We’ll send out additional information closer to the event to discuss carpooling options.

Listening to the Land: Reimagining the Bartram Trail – Free Public Reception

Listening to the Land is a visual exploration of the Blue Ridge Bartram Trail, or Bartram National Recreational Trail, that features photography and photo-based installations by thirty-two artists. The photographs featured in this resonant and varied exhibition celebrate the region’s rich biodiversity while honoring each person’s unique relationship with the land.

Drawing inspiration from Bartram’s Travels and the enduring wisdom of land-based and indigenous peoples of this region, photographers were invited to enter an intimate world where the landscape was alive and waiting to be met, understood, and listened to. This exhibition invites you to contemplate your own wild origins while visually reimagining a time when humans moved in respect, harmony, and co-creative kinship with the natural world.

The Shape of Summer: Wildflower Walk and Site-Specific Cyanotypes with Brent Martin & Eric William Carroll

Saturday, July 22nd, 10 am – 4 pm @ Cowee School Arts & Heritage Center in Franklin, NC
Hosted by: The Blue Ridge Bartram Trail Conservancy

Brent Martin will lead participants in a midsummer wildflower walk on the Little Tennessee River in the Cowee National Historic District. This easy walk will allow participants to collect a wide variety of plants and flowering parts for the creation of their own cyanotype, as well as learn about the incredible plant diversity in the Little Tennessee Watershed.

Following the wildflower walk, we’ll meet at the Cowee School where participants will be introduced to the cyanotype process by artist Eric William Carroll. Together we’ll create photograms (cameraless photographs) based on the specimens collected during the walk. Participants will be encouraged to creatively illuminate their clippings in multiple ways, showcasing the broad range of interpretations each plant can have. Some of the work created during the workshop will be displayed at the Bascom: Center for Visual Arts in an exhibition this fall. No experience is necessary and this workshop is appropriate for ages 10+. All materials will be provided. More photos at the bottom of this page.

2023 Bartram Trail Conference in Athens, GA

This year’s Bartram Trail Conference is being held at the University of Georgia in Athens from August 4-5.

Theme I: Following in Bartram’s Footsteps

“Mapping the New Purchase: Bartram’s First-Person Account,” Dr. Kathryn Braund.

“In Search of William Bartram’s Buffalo Lick,” Brad Sanders.

“Finding Bartram’s Fish,” Dr. Bud Freeman, Georgia Natural History Museum.

Focusing on the fish species Bartram described from the Broad River in northeast Georgia as well as efforts to establish a new species of shoal bass to be named in honor of Bartram.

Theme II: Preservation and Innovation

“The usefull, the beautifull, the singular…” Highlighting the State Botanical Garden’s work in propagating rare plants as part of the Center for Plant Conservation.” State Botanical Garden of Georgia staff member to be decided. Focus on rare plants in northeast Georgia as well as elsewhere in the state, particularly those related to Bartram. Afternoon guided tour of rare plant propagation facilities at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.

Theme II: Preservation and Innovation (continued)

“Preserving Bartram Landscapes in Georgia,” Wendy Jo Ledbetter, Fort Stewart Project, The Longleaf Alliance.
